Three passages from Homage to Ruth Berlau, ABACUS 1999, ed. Peter Ganick

* Mary Engle writes to her daughter in 1959 about her drawings, “What I do is junk.”
**Only yesterday did the view emerge that Homage to Ruth Berlau is written in Walter Benjamin’s voice – the summer in Svendborg – Berlau, Brecht’s lover, would have been present during some of the conversations; Benjamin would have suppressed any reference to those conversations out of deference to Weigl. The plan for the postwar Model Books may well have started in Svendborg.
