My character? Passionate, impatient, combative. From my family I took my passion, which they were well known for. My passion was a consequence as well of the consciousness that I carried – of humanity. Impatient, I wanted everything done immediately. My combativity scared me for wanting to understand and undertake everything. If in anything I did I did not get the results I anticipated or if anything I started led nowhere, it would eat away at me inside and leave me clawing for air.

The note of pathos in the anti-imperialist tendency developing in American Studies since the shock of the first Gulf War does not defer the necessity of the discourse on the symbolic construction of America to abolish itself should not prevent attention to the centuries’ old problem of opposing wars of conquest militarization wars of aggression and the arming of nations without the fall from innocence that the discourse of wars of defense represents, and whatever else it does, the modernist project of social revolution shows ‘the peoples so dominated’ how to defend themselves articulates ‘the peoples so dominated’ in a war of defense [defense against aggression] as makers of their own history and defenders of the enlightenment horizon that against the collapse of the enlightenment horizon where birth does not confer the right to live. – Łódź, Poland, 2004

The 2004 notebook entry commits the theoretical error of conceptualizing outside a specific conjuncture. No two events are ever alike. If the French Revolution is unfinished, the second Bonaparte bears no relation to the first, and Marx’s tragedy/farce couplet in The Eighteenth Brumaire cannot be said to ascribe repetition to events. The notebook entry is transcribed for this diary since it may record the first articulation of birth does not confer the right to live : postmodernity’s imperialist and totalitarian threat to the world’s workers and farmers and their class allies of collapsing the enlightenment horizon’s universalizing of human rights. Disconnected from concrete analysis of a specific conjuncture, wars of aggression and wars of defense apply a form of abstract idealism targeted by Adorno’s post-holocaust demand for strictest linguistic objectivity. If modernity is dated to July 14, 1789, “the modernist project of social revolution” may refer to temporal markers like North America’s and Russia’s emancipation proclamations, the civil rights movement in the United States or the fall of the Romanov dynasty that Žižek has weirdly called the most traumatic event (in the history of the West? [cited from memory]), or “The new age / opened up by the stroke of an ax at Whitehall / on 30 January 1649,” Trotsky, History of the Russian Revolution (qtd. in Recent Events, Hypobololemaioi, 1995, n.p.) or Spicer’s 1965 Bolivian allusion:
