“Junk,” Recent Events, San Francisco:

That the Communist Manifesto was included among the few books that belonged to an aircraft sheetmetal worker and a grocery store worker, the entire catalogue consisting of patriotic ballads by Eddie Guest, God’s Trombones by James Weldon Johnson, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, The Wind in the Willows, The Story of Sioux County, The World’s Great Philosophies [Thinkers, NOT Philosophies, Random House, 1947] and The Best Loved Poems of the American People, was due to the one year my mother was able to attend a South Dakota teacher’s college, and my father’s brief exposure in Los Angeles to the labor movement in the 1930s. Upton Sinclair was the family martyr – for what he had done, not what he’d written. The only church we ever attended were my mother’s stories of growing up on the farm. I introduce this bibliography the more concretely to insist that I read everything, and everything I read I took. [Facing page (non-paginated): PEN PAL ]
